The 2018 Association for Asian American Studies Best Book Award in Creative Writing (Prose) has been given to  Shawna Yang Ryan for her 2016 novel Green Island. Ryan is an associate professor in the Department of English and also serves as its creative writing director. This is the second national award for Green Island; it received an American Book Award last year.

Green Island is about a physician and his family in Taiwan who are torn apart by Chiang Kai-shek’s authoritarian Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalists) who ruled the island country by taking over its government at the conclusion of World War II. The awards committee found the book a “riveting, intensively researched family drama” and notes “Ryan has a nice eye for incidental detail” which makes “Taiwan in the 1940s come alive.”
