Fall 2018 Message from the Dean

Aloha, Friends and Alumni of the College of Languages, Linguistics & Literature,

The new academic year is now underway, and at UHM, we are thrilled to welcome our largest entering class ever. The Wednesday before school started, LLL held an ice cream social so that our new majors could meet each other and the faculty. As I learned why these new students had each chosen LLL majors, I was struck by just how aware they and their parents are of what we refer to in this college as “the power of the word.” While their goals are singular, collectively they value multilingualism and understand that language, far from being transparent, involves complexity, the study of which will make these students excellent thinkers and writers, and better prepared to meet the challenges ahead. Their commitment to studying with us and their plans for the future inspire us to continue to provide a range of classes that teaches students indispensable skills and introduces them to cutting-edge scholarship.

We also welcome new faculty in East Asian Languages and Literatures; English; Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures; Languages & Literatures of Europe and the Americas; and Linguistics.

As I read through the accomplishments of our students and faculty contained in this post, I am incredibly proud of all the work that we do in LLL. I also cannot help but imagine the many ways our entering class of majors and new faculty cohort will contribute to this college’s many accolades in the years to come.

As much as we want to keep you apprised of college news so that you can share it with others, we also hope to hear from you. The personal notes I receive from our alumni testify to how they have each made “the power of the word” their own. I look forward to hearing from more of you this year. Please write to me at lelyons@hawaii.edu.

Me ke aloha pumehana,

Laura E. Lyons
Interim Dean
